Hotels chains improve complimentary breakfasts

Hotels are re-thinking the most important meal of the day, spending millions to make their complimentary breakfast programs more appealing to guests. Chains catering to business travelers and extended-stay guests, where free breakfast has become part of the deal, are offering a wider variety of menu items, sprucing up dining areas and adjusting to the USA's ever-changing healthy-eating trends

Hampton Inn spent $14 million to introduce hot breakfasts last year. Marriott's Residence Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Staybridge Suites and SpringHill Suites also have upgraded their free-breakfast services in the past year. Complimentary breakfasts consistently rank near the top of a list of items considered important by guests at midlevel hotels. The hotel industry, enjoying a post-Sept. 11 boom, now has the financial wherewithal and competitive incentives to upgrade.
